From the Roost
indy comic book recommendation, previews, and free stuff.
Greetings fellow comic book and fantasy fans. We are starting a new series of informative posts called From the Roost. Sometimes we will write about comic books, sometimes about craft beer, sometimes about webcomics, and sometimes there will be tutorials but always this is about thing we would like to share with you. Knowledge is the landscape of this brave new world. Our first brief installment from Joshua will be about a indy comics we like and hope you find them fascinating as well.
Sabretooth Dan by Scout Comics.
Sabretooth Dan: a talent for danger is published by Scout comics and the writer/artist is C.R. Mountain. Brendan Deneen helms Scout Comics and they have a variety of good titles such as Solar Flare and Mindbender.
Sabretooth Dan is about a foundling who was raised by werewolves. He didn’t fit in and dreamt about a life of adventure. He got what he wished for but not the way he expected. His eagerness gets him in trouble but he finds his way to a pirate ship and become a great adventurer. The story is compelling an quick. Funny at times and has a Bart Simpson meets Peter Pan vibe.
The art is black and white but the light and shadows deliver depth to the panels. It is stylized in the manner Scott Pilgrim comics in that the form doesn’t take away from the story. In fact, it adds nicely. As with most comics, there are issues with lettering and panel anatomy where backgrounds are not as developed as I like or the dialogue balloons could be placed in a different way, but this is subjective. The series is engaging and pulls you right in as a good story will. I recommend picking it up online or at conventions that Scout Comics might be exhibiting.
Horsemen: The Complete Trade (preview)
It has been a journey for us since 2012 and getting Horsemen completed was always a motivating factor. We love scifi. We love fantasy and mythology. We love mixing it up an so we did.
SFX are fun. And so is swordplay.
